Legislature finalizes controversial budget deal

Phoenix, AZ – State lawmakers early this morning finally approved a revised
budget to deal with the deficit.

Adoption came after the Republican-controlled Legislature beat
back efforts by Democrats to reverse proposed cuts for several
programs, especially funds for public schools, community colleges
and universities. One amendment by Rep. David Schapira
specifically sought to restore the $142 million in cuts to the
university system.

State Lawmakers Move Toward Banning Partial Birth Abortions

Phoenix, AZ –
Arizona already has a law making it a crime to abort a partially
delivered fetus, but it was never enforced after a federal judge
declared it unconstitutional. Since then, Congress has approved --
and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld -- a federal ban. But Ron
Johnson, who lobbies for the state's Catholic bishops, said that's
not enough.
