A federal appeals court has denied the latest request from former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi for a new trial on corruption charges.

An assistant U.S. Attorney in Phoenix has been assigned to lead the Justice Department's elections oversight efforts in the state.

U.S. Attorney for Arizona John Leonardo announced Monday that he has appointed Todd Allison to serve as district election officer in the state.

Allison will be responsible for handling complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses along with officials at the agency's Washington headquarters.

It’s week two of a manhunt for a leader of a polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Federal authorities say Lyle Jeffs is wanted on charges of food stamp fraud. Arizona Public Radio’s Aaron Granillo reports Jeffs escaped house arrest after removing his GPS monitoring device.


Polygamous sect leader Lyle Jeffs has fled home confinement in Salt Lake City less than two weeks after he was let out of jail pending trial on charges in a multimillion-dollar food stamp fraud scheme.

A warrant for Jeffs' arrest was issued Sunday afternoon after he took off sometime over the weekend, said U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch. She said authorities aren't releasing details about how he got loose.
