No winner yet in Congressional District 1

In Congressional District One, the night ended without a winner.

Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick trailed Republican Jonathan Paton throughout the night.

As of midnight, Paton led by 2,000 votes.

But Kirkpatrick’s campaign held out hope that tribal precincts would help them pull out a victory.

She briefly greeted supporters in Flagstaff Tuesday evening and told them to settle in for a long night.

She said they were hoping to pull ahead once precincts on the Navajo and Apache reservations reported their ballots.

Kirkpatrick spent Election Day campaigning on the Navajo Nation.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson says the turnout there was strong.

“We are hearing reports that there were long lines and that many polls had to stay open later,” Johnson says.

The race between Kirkpatrick and Republican Jonathan Paton tightened as Election Day neared.

Millions of dollars in outside campaign funds have poured into the race for the newly drawn Congressional district.
