Candidate Paton Claims Important Endorsement.....a Little Early.

Jonathan Paton, a first district congressional candidate is claiming a big win today.

Republican Jonathan Paton sent out a morning announcement claiming he'd won the endorsement of the Navajo Tribal Council.

He wrote that tribal members appreciated the fact that some of Paton’s family had taught on the reservation and that he had served in Iraq.

If it were true, the endorsement would have been a big blow to Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick’s campaign.

Navajos make up 21% of the vote in CD1

And having grown up on the Apache nation, Kirkpatrick claims close ties to native people in the area.

She's already announced that she’s received the support of Navajo Nation President Ben Shelley…as well as other Navajo Agencies.

It turns out that Paton’s announcement is not true.

At least, not yet.

According to a Tribal Council spokeman, Paton did receive the endorsement of a committee of the Navajo Tribal Council.

But only half of the committee’s 24 members attended the vote.

And two voted against him.

The committee’s endorsement must go to the full 24 member council for approval.
