Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a $9.1 billion budget that includes nearly $100 million in cuts to Arizona's universities.

Flagstaff Rep. Thorpe: State Budget Cuts Necessary to Boost Economy

Flagstaff Republican state Rep. Bob Thorpe is the chairman of the House Government and Higher Education Committee. He and other lawmakers recently passed a budget that reduces state government spending by nearly 2-and-a-half percent, and includes almost $100 million in cuts to higher education.

Last weekend, the Arizona state legislature passed a $9.1 billion budget, which includes significant cuts to some state services including higher education. Arizona Public Radio’s Ryan Heinsius recently spoke with Flagstaff Republican Representative Bob Thorpe, chairman of the Government and Higher Education Committee, about the cuts.

NAU President Cheng Voices Budget-Cut Concerns to Governor’s Office

Governor Doug Ducey’s proposal to cut funding to the state universities is drawing concerns from Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng. In a statement issued to Governor Ducey, Cheng said the proposed $13.1 million funding cut will make it challenging for NAU to operate. Cheng said the university is already working on a reduced budget, citing previous deep cuts during the Great Recession. Cheng added that NAU’s campus community is planning a number of discussions to determine critical priorities and where spending cuts can be made.
