Signature Count Continues for State Minimum Wage Initiative

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has refused to slow signature validation for an initiative to raise Arizona's minimum wage.

The Arizona Capitol Times reports Judge Douglas Gerlach on Tuesday denied a request for a temporary restraining order sought by the Arizona Restaurant and Hospitality Association.

It would have prevented the Secretary of State's Office from kick-starting the process of validating signatures collected on a ballot initiative.

The association says the office is acting far faster than is statutorily required to conduct an initial check of the more than 250,000 signatures filed.

The initiative seeks to raise the minimum wage to $12 per hour by 2020 and provide earned sick days to workers.

Arizona's current minimum wage is $8.05. That's just above the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour.
