Replacement Of Grand Canyon Village Lodging Complex Proposed

EXPEDIA.COM

Federal officials want to demolish and rebuild an aging lodging complex at Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

An open house is scheduled Wednesday on the proposal to replace the six-building Maswik South complex, which was built in 1971 and which the National Park Service says has exceeded its "expected useful life of 40 years."

The park service said it is seeking public comment as it prepares an environmental assessment to develop and evaluate alternatives for the project.

The project would include replacing the complex's current 90 rooms with up to 120 rooms and constructing a half-mile (0.8 kilometer) of new road to improve traffic flow.

A concessionaire operates the complex under a contract with the park service.
