Prospect of Life without Napolitano worries some Dems
Phoenix, AZ – The possibility that Janet Napolitano could become part of an
Obama administration is giving some Democrats heartburn. Arizona
Public Radio's Howard Fischer explains.
Napolitano may not be what Obama is seeking in a vice president.
But she could be attorney general. That would mean quitting her
job as governor -- leaving the post to Republican Secretary of
State Jan Brewer. That worries Rep. Steve Gallardo because the
real power Democrats have in the Republican-controlled
Legislature is having Napolitano there as a backstop.
(We would all like to see her fulfill her term here in the state
of Arizona as our governor. The idea of having Gov. Jan Brewer
leading the way here at the state Capitol is fearful not only to
me but to many in the state of Arizona I'm sure.)
And some Democrat lawmakers like Sen. Jorge Garcia are dealing
with the possibility through denial.
(You know, I've lit so many candles. I don't think Janet would be
so mean to Arizona Democrats to leave us with Jan.)
Brewer said she has not given it a lot of thought. But she
concedes things would be different if she were governor.
(Certainly I think, philosophically, we have some differences.
I'm certainly not a tax-and-spend elected official..)
While Napolitano is mum, Obama said in January she has -- quote -
