Napolitano Increases Border Security Funds
Flagstaff, AZ – Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano wants to increase enforcement along the border to prevent drug-fueled violence from spilling into the U.S. from Mexico. At a conference yesterday in El Paso, Texas, Napolitano announced 30 million dollars in additional funding for the border security program "Operation Stonegarden". The funds would be used to fight border violence in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Drug violence has killed more than 11 thousand people in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon took office in 2006. The mayor of McAllen, Texas told the Homeland Security Secretary that drug-related violence crime has escalated in small, rural areas. But, the mayors of Tucson and San Diego report that drug-related crime is down in their cities.
