The board overseeing Arizona's three public universities has voted to grant in-state tuition to young immigrants who were granted deferred deportation status by the Obama administration.
The decision Thursday by the Arizona Board of Regents came after a Maricopa County judge ruled that the immigrants were eligible for cheaper in-state tuition.
In 2013, then-Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne filed a lawsuit that alleged metro Phoenix's community college system violated the law by determining immigrants who received work-eligibility documents as part of the Obama policy were eligible for in-state tuition rate.
The system had denied violating the law and argued that the students' presence in the country is legal while they participate in Obama's program.
Regents say they are committed to providing affordable access to higher education for all eligible students.
