Mission Statement
KNAU is the premier source of balanced, accurate information, civilized discourse, and cultural inspiration in northern Arizona.  We reflect the distinctive qualities of our region and operate in efficient and sustainable ways. 

KNAU is a public service of Northern Arizona University.


Frequencies

KNAU serves a huge coverage area: ranging from Kingman on the west to Ganado on the east; Grand Canyon Village and Page on the north to the fringes of the Phoenix metro area on the south. KNAU's coverage area also includes both the Navajo and Hopi Reservations.

Station History
KNAU has been a public service of Northern Arizona University for 25 years.  Since signing on in 1983, KNAU has expanded to serve the greater northern Arizona region, providing two programming streams, Classical Music and NPR News and Talk.  KNAU is constantly striving to better serve northern Arizona by improving radio signals to outlying areas.  Since beginning in 1983, we have constructed 13 transmitters and, in 2008, started construction on a satellite interconnection system.
  • 1983 - KNAU signs on in November
  • 1994 - KNAU increases airtime devoted to NPR newsmagazines, begins carrying Car Talk, Fresh Air, A Prairie Home Companion
  • 1995 - 91.7 FM transmitter on Mt. Elden delivers crisp KNAU signal to Flagstaff
  • 1996 - Edge of the Rez documentary series
  • 1997 - Repeater stations built in Prescott & Show Low
  • 1998 - New studios constructed on NAU campus
  • 1999 - Show Low repeater station
  • 2000 - KNAU starts streaming programming over knau.org
  • 2001 - KNAU broadcasts two streams: (1) NPR News and Classical Music and (2) NPR News and Talk; KNAU trademarks name "Arizona Public Radio"
  • 2002 - Earth Notes partnership created with NAU Center for Sustainable Environments
  • 2003 - Indian Country News Bureau partnership created with KUYI Hopi Radio.
  • 2003 - Repeater station built in Grand Canyon
  • 2005 - KNAU receives Radio Television News Director's Award for outstanding investigative journalism
  • 2005 - Partnership established with KAWC Yuma.
  • 2006 - Edge of the Rez Revisited produced with Arizona Daily Sun.
  • 2006 - KNAU receives Unity Award for outstanding coverage of diversity issues
  • 2007 - Repeater stations built in Payson and Cottonwood. KNAU now provides two channel service to Flagstaff, Prescott and Cottonwood.
  • 2008 - Poverty with a View series produced with NPR Local News Initiative; Cellular One satellite connection construction begins: first downlink in Show Low

Directions
The KNAU studios are located in Building 83 on the south end of the Northern Arizona University campus.

Directions from downtown Flagstaff:
Follow San Francisco St. south past the NAU Skydome to the 4-way stop at Pine Knoll. Continue south through intersection up the hill. Follow curve to left to building with red roof, satellite dishes, and KNAU sign.

Directions from Phoenix:
Exit I-17 North at McConnell Dr. / NAU.  Right onto McConnell.  Straight through 2 stop signs to San Francisco St.  South on San Francisco past the Skydome, through Pine Knoll intersection, up the hill.  Follow curve to left to building with a red roof, satellite dishes, and KNAU sign.
